Maestro for a Moment

This year’s Maestro for a Moment candidate is Dr. Jo Li. Read on for his nomination letter written by his wife, Cheryl.

Dear Friends of the Arts,

My husband, Joseph Li, M.D., has been asked to campaign for The Ohio Valley Symphony’s annual fund raiser “Maestro for a Moment” October 8, 2011. The 8:00 pm concert will be held at the Lillian and Paul Wedge Auditorium at Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High School.

As for Joe’s qualifications, he has played guitar and has taken piano lessons. He has enough experience to be very appreciative of people who play, making him a big fan of The Ohio Valley Symphony. Joe has also (possibly forced by me) watched Lawrence Welk a lot, so he has a great understanding of how to conduct an orchestra!

We want the Ohio Valley Symphony to be able to keep playing music to inspire others and help children to follow their dreams. Joe works as a Pediatrician at Holzer Clinic. He is also a father who knows the power of music and its impact on the intellectual, social and personal development of children.

Please join us in supporting The Ohio Valley Symphony by making a tax-deductible donation of any amount. Whatever amount you can donate, big or small, will be greatly appreciated. Also, please be sure to write his name on the memo line of the check. If you are so kind to donate $1,000 or more, you will receive a plaque engraved with your name that will be permanently attached to a seat in the theatre. The Ariel Theatre will contact you for the text for the plaque engraving to attach to a seat in the theatre, so be sure to put your phone number and mailing address on your check. If you would like to pay by Credit Card, please call the Box Office at 740-446-2787.

Please make checks payable to: (memo- Joseph Li, Maestro)
Ohio Valley Symphony
218 Pineview Drive
Gallipolis, OH 45631

Please return in the enclosed envelope before October 8th.

Come see us live October 8. If we win, we will dance for you. When the beat of the music starts, we get this amazing, wonderful feeling as we dance that we can actually fly around the dance floor! Please come and watch Joe dance and pick up the baton. Joe will treat us to his unique interpretation of “Stars and Stripes Forever” and keep us all on the beat! Thank you in advance for your support and generosity.

The Ohio Valley Symphony – Hip Harp in Point Pleasant, WV on 10/08/11

The Ohio Valley Symphony kicks off its 22nd season with a combination of hip style and traditional flair.

For its 2011-12 series opener, southeast Ohio’s only professional orchestra welcomes Deborah Henson-Conant back to the Ohio Valley for “Hip Harp,” a night with the world’s first electric harpist.

Ray Fowler, the orchestra’s music director, leads the 8 p.m. performance Oct. 8 in the Lillian & Paul Wedge Auditorium at the Point Pleasant Jr./Sr. High School in Pt. PleasantWV.

The program’s sponsor is Ohio Valley Bank, a long-time OVS supporter. As a part of the bank’s “Year of Celebration”, OVB will be giving away symphony tickets at their Main Office during the week of October 3rd-7th.  Stop by their office to register for free tickets and join them as they celebrate a very special anniversary.

It’s the fourth year the OVS has performed in Point Pleasant, including a concert that helped dedicate the facility’s completion. “We can’t expect everyone to come to us,” said Lora Snow, the orchestra’s founder and executive director, “so we’re happy to go to them to share our beautiful music.”

That organization has, over more than two decades, built a reputation for offering a lineup of world-class guest artists performing music ranging from R&B to classical mainstays to holiday favorites. That variety is key both to the OVS’s mission and its two decades of success, said Snow.

“Great music comes in all kinds of packages,” she said, “and we try to show people all the things an orchestra can do. It’s a lot more than just symphonies.”

That will be clear at “Hip Harp.” Henson-Conant — a Grammy-nominated performer, composer and songwriter — has built a renegade image on her evocative singing voice and the 36-string, custom-built electric harness harp she plays. Her programs fuse theater, stories and virtuosic playing skill and cover genres from ballads to jazz to flamenco.

The region got a free sample of Henson-Conant’s music on July 4, when she performed with the orchestra in Gallipolis City Park (click here to see a video of the parade). She’ll put on a different program on October 8.

It’s the first time a guest artist has appeared with the OVS twice in the same year. For Fowler, Henson-Conant was an obvious choice for the honor.
