The Emancipation Proclamation has been celebrated and observed in Gallia County, Ohio continuously since 1863. The Gallia County Emancipation Day Celebration is reported to be the longest continuous celebration in the United States.

Historically, the original celebration was always celebrated on the 22nd of September. This coincided with President Abraham Lincolns historic signing of the Emancipation Proclamation which declared slaves thenceforth and forever more free. It was conducted in a religious atmosphere. Activities and games such as baseball, sack racing, hog calling and greasy pole climbing were included to stimulate interest and maintain enthusiasm. Bands, famous orators, politicians, parades, dances and queen contest were also included in the celebration.

Kerr Station, Vinton Bean Dinner Park, Bush Park, Bidwell-Porter, Gallipolis City Park and the Gallia County Fairgrounds have served as locations for the annual celebration.

As many as 2,500 people have attended the celebration. In recent years, people from as far away as California, New York, Texas, Florida and Canada have been represented. In fact, the Emancipation Celebration is often thought of as a homecoming for Gallia County and the surrounding communities. Along with paying tribute to the freedom of Blacks, guests have gained much from reuniting with their family and friends. The celebration provides a great arena to reflect upon the past, experience the present and project the future of African-Americans in Southeastern Ohio, Ohio and OUR Nation.

2013 Summer Elizabeth Concert

For the fifth year, The Ohio Valley Symphony will offer some free fireworks of its own to help celebrate

The free concert, July 6 at 8 pm in the Gallipolis City Park, helps celebrate the nation’s 236th birthday with a musical picnic of patriotic songs including a salute to America’s armed forces, a tribute to Martin Luther King and Sousa marches. The keystone to the evening will be Tchaikovsky’s rousing “1812 Overture.” Ray Fowler, the OVS’s founding music director, conducts.

Joining Fowler and the orchestra is the vocal group SEVEN a member of which is Gallia County’s own Phillip Armstrong.

Following their debut concert in October of 2011, SEVEN has been on a fast track to success. The Might Sound of SEVEN has re-invented the “popera” idiom by creating a new sound never before heard on the classical stage, the church platform or the convention center banquet hall.

The men of SEVEN originate from all over the United State and their roots are as diverse as their music. When Amick, Charlie, Frank, John, Kelly, Phil and Van come together, SEVEN’s live performance is an experience overflowing with joy, vitality and variety, from start to finish.

The unique voices, charm and heart of SEVEN take audiences of an inspirational journey that will change your life!

For 23 years, the Ohio Valley Symphony has been southeast Ohio’s only professional orchestra. The Fourth of July concert is part of its mission to bring great music performed by great artists to the Ohio Valley region. The program is dubbed the Summer Elizabeth Concert in honor of OVS volunteer Elizabeth Davidson, who suggested the idea. The teen’s enthusiasm convinced philanthropist Ann Carson Dater to fund the program.

Mrs. Dater has often professed the world would be a better place if more people listened to symphonic music. There’s no easier way than a free concert.

In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held in the Ariel-Ann Carson Dater Performing Arts Centre in downtown Gallipolis, Ohio.

Funding for The Ohio Valley Symphony is provided by the Ann Carson Dater Endowment.

More information: Join the fun at the ARIEL MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS!

MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS is celebrating its 39th Anniversary (1974-2012). Created by Harvey Phillips, MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS 2012 will be presented in over 250 cities throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. Phillips was inspired to create TUBACHRISTMAS as an annual event honoring his teacher, the late great tubist William J. Bell (born Christmas Day, 1902).

Every Christmas season, tuba and euphonium players of all ages, from specific geographic areas, gather to pay respect – through William J. Bell – to all the great artists/teachers who represent their heritage.  Every TUBACHRISTMAS performance features traditional Christmas carols especially arranged (for the first TUBACHRISTMAS, December 22, 1974 on “The Rink at Rockefeller Center”) by American composer Alec Wilder (died Christmas Eve, 1980).

Through Wilder, TUBACHRISTMAS concerts pay grateful tribute to composers who have embraced these noble instruments with solo and ensemble compositions.  Depending on the population of any given geographic area, TUBACHRISTMAS ensembles may attract multiples of 100 participants aged 8 to over 90 years!  The warm, rich organ-like sound of tuba-euphonium choir has won the ears and hearts of every audience.

It is no wonder that TUBACHRISTMAS has become an established Christmas tradition in cities throughout the world.
