The rich and exotic colors painted by the orchestra along with numerous lush and memorable melodies, combine to make the exotic musical tale of Scheherazade an audience favorite since its premiere in 1888. Rimsky-Korsakov set out to paint an Oriental picture using music to tell the tale of a Sultan who put to death each wife he married. Scheherazade was clever enough to spin a never ending tale so that each night her life was spared for a thousand and one nights when the Sultan finally saw the error of his ways and repudiated his bloody vow and spared her life. This hugely popular piece has been used for ballets, numerous figure skater’s routines, given lyrics for use as popular vocal selections and been performed and recorded by orchestras the world over.
