Restituto “Resty” Alonzo Memorial Donation

CINCINNATI — Restituto H. Alonzo “Resty,” 82, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 10, 2017.

Born in Olongapo, Philippines, son of the late Guillermo and Silvina Alonzo. He was married to Gisela for 57 years and survived by daughters Sylvia (Ronald) Rineair, and Angela (John) LaRuffa, grandchildren Brian (Corey) Rineair, Andrew (Emily) Rineair, Steven Williams (Deanna Woodall), Marisa LaRuffa. He has a brother-in-law Dieter Parzl and family in Germany with various cousins in the Philippines and in New York.

His medical practice as a urologist was in Gallipolis, Ohio, at Holzer Medical Center for 35 years. Memberships include American Medical Association, American Urological Association, American College of Surgeons, Ohio State Medical Association, Philippine American Urological Society, Society of Philippine Surgeons in America and Gallipolis Rotary Club.

Memorial Service was at Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM Church on 7820 Beechmont Avenue in Cincinnati, Ohio, 45255). A memorial gathering was held at IHM on November 16, 2017.  A memorial mass was be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church with a reception at IHM church after memorial mass.

James Lee Dailey Memorial

Born September 5, 1934 in Gallipolis, OH to the late Harold Elmer and Edna Lee McKean Dailey. He had one brother William Dailey, who preceded him in death. He later lived in Hilliard and Russell’s Point/Indian Lake, OH.

After a short illness, he passed away peacefully on September 21, 2017 surrounded by family at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife, Becky Dailey, Hilliard, OH; 2 daughters: Mandy Goble (Robert), Bellefontaine, OH, Jane Dailey, New Albany, Indiana; 2 stepchildren: Debbie (Steve) Caudill, Hilliard, OH, Steve (Kathy) Mullins (Chillicothe, OH); 2 Grandchildren, Eric (Alexis) Goble, Michelle Goble and 5 step grandchildren: Matt Shinkle, Erik (Chelsea) Mullins, Sara Mullins, Jimmy Caudill, Meghan Caudill; 2 sisters: Sue (Philip) Miller and Sally (Brian) Lanier; his former wife, Juanita Evans and multiple other family members who loved him dearly.

Jim graduated from Gallia Academy High School in 1952, where he played football, was active in many organizations and was later instrumental in the establishment of the Gallia Academy Alumni Association.

Jim attended both Ohio Wesleyan where he played football and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi and The Ohio State University before graduating from The Ohio State College of Dentistry in 1959.

Jim practiced as a dentist in Gallipolis until 1976.

Jim worked at the Ohio Valley Bank for 35 years, where he served as Director, President, CEO, Chairman and Director Emeritus of the Ohio Valley Bank Corp Board until his death.

Throughout his life he was active in many local organizations and passionately believed in “paying it forward”.
In his early years, Jim was an active member of the Lions Club, worked as an Ohio High School Football Referee, was instrumental in the establishment of the Gallipolis Midget League Football program, served on the Rio Grande College Community College Board of Directors and was an active Rio Grande Athletic Booster Club Member.

Throughout his life, Jim was an active supporter of both local and state-wide 4-H youth, where he was instrumental in establishing the Ohio Valley Bank 4-H Youth Scholarship program, which has provided educational financial assistance to countless local area students. He also served on the Ohio 4-H Foundation Board, was instrumental in the development of the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center located at The Ohio State University and in 1996, was inducted into the 4-H Youth Development Hall of Fame.

Jim was instrumental in the development of the Ariel Opera House, providing encouragement, support and raising funds for the restoration.

In 2003, he received the Outstanding Philanthropist Award from the Foundation of Appalachian, OH and in 2005 he received the Ohio State University Gerlach Development Volunteer Award.

Jim had a passion for his family, helping others, Ohio State University football and Ireland, his ancestral home which he visited several times.
He will always be remembered for his generosity to others, his candy cane cookies and for playing Santa Clause for his grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM. Saturday September 30, 2017 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Pastor Jamie Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Mound Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM. and from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

The 2017 Homecoming Reception and Concert will be held Friday, September 15, 2017 at the historic Ariel Opera House located at 426 Second Avenue, Gallipolis, Ohio beginning at 6:00 pm.

History of the Annual Emancipation Day

The Emancipation Proclamation has been celebrated and observed in Gallia County, Ohio continuously since 1863. The Gallia County Emancipation Day Celebration is reported to be one of the longest continuous running celebrations of the Emancipation Proclamation in the United States.

Historically, the celebration originally was always celebrated on the 22nd of September. This coincided with President Lincoln’s historic signing of the Emancipation Proclamation which declared slaves “thenceforth and forever more free.” It was conducted in a religious atmosphere. Activities & games such as baseball, sack racing, hog calling and greasy pole climbing were included to stimulate the interest and maintain enthusiasm. Bands, famous orators, politicians, parades, dance and queen contests were also included in the celebration.

Squire Parsons, a native of West Virginia was raised in a Christian home and was introduced to gospel music by his parents. His father, Squire Parsons, Sr., was a choir director in their home church and taught shaped note gospel music.

Squire has served as interim music director, church soloist, elementary school music teacher, high school band director and in 1975 he became the baritone singer for the Kingsmen Quartet. In 1979 Squire went into solo ministry.

Since 1978, Squire Parsons has been nominated by the SINGING NEWS’ fans for “Favorite Baritone”, “Favorite Gospel Songwriter” and “Favorite Gospel Singer”. He was named “Favorite Baritone” in 1986 and 1987. In 1986, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995 – “Favorite Gospel Songwriter”. In 1988 he was named “Favorite Southern Gospel Male Singer”.

The historic Ariel Opera House presents the Ariel Players in The Music Man.

The Music Man is the classic musical written by Meredith Willson and is loosely based on his small town upbringing. Con man Harold Hill comes to Iowa in 1912 to sell band instruments and uniforms to the unsuspecting residents of River City. Marion, the librarian and piano teacher, sees right through him but eventually falls for his charms when he helps her younger brother overcome his lisp. Hill unites the town via music, including the bickering school board members that he forms into a barber shop quartet. In near continuous production by amateurs and professionals since its premiere in 1957, the show won 5 Tony awards including Best Musical and a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album. Some of the well known songs from The Music Man include 76 Trombones, Goodnight Ladies, The Wells Fargo Wagon and Goodnight My Someone.
